What is a Nasogastric Tube (NGT)?

A Nasogastric Tube is a thin, flexible tube inserted through the nose, down the esophagus, and into the stomach. It is primarily used for feeding patients who cannot eat or swallow food orally, administering medications, or removing stomach contents. NGT insertion is commonly used for patients with critical illnesses, neurological conditions, or post-surgical recovery where normal feeding is not possible.

Types of Nasogastric Tubes

  • Silicone Tube

Silicone tubes are more flexible and gentle, making them suitable

for long-term use, especially in patients with sensitive nasal

passages. They are highly biocompatible, minimizing irritation.

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Tube
These tubes are firmer and are often used for short-term insertion. PVC tubes are suitable for patients who require temporary feeding or stomach drainage due to illness or injury

NGT Insertion Method-  What to Expect

  1. Assessment and Preparation

Before the insertion, our healthcare professional will assess the patient’s condition to ensure that an NGT is appropriate. The patient’s medical history and any underlying conditions will also be reviewed. The necessary equipment, including the NGT, lubricant, and pH strips for stomach content confirmation, will be prepared.

  2. Patient Positioning

The patient will be positioned sitting upright or with the head elevated to facilitate smooth tube passage and reduce the risk of discomfort. This position also ensures that the tube is safely guided down the esophagus.

  3. Tube Lubrication and Insertion

The tube will be lubricated with a water-based gel for easier insertion. The healthcare professional will gently guide the tube through one of the nostrils, down the throat, and into the stomach. The process is done with great care to minimize discomfort, and the patient may be asked to swallow during the procedure to aid in guiding the tube down the esophagus.

  4. Confirmation of Placement

Once the tube is inserted, the placement will be confirmed by checking the pH of stomach contents or through auscultation (listening to the stomach with a stethoscope) to ensure the tube is in the correct position.

  5. Securing the Tube

After the correct placement is confirmed, the tube will be secured with adhesive tape to the side of the nose, ensuring it remains in place. Proper instructions for daily management and care will be provided to the patient and caregivers
